Online immigration status (eVisa) Update

Information on eVisas and why you need one. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) are developing a digital immigration system. This means they are replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa.

Last updated 15 May 2024

The documents being replaced are: biometric residence permits (BRP), biometric residence cards (BRC), passport endorsements, such as indefinite leave to enter wet ink stamps and vignette stickers in passports, such as entry clearance or visa vignettes. Learn more below.

What is an eVisa?

The UK’s immigration system is currently undergoing digitization, whereby the way in which visas are issued and the way persons prove their status in the UK are changing.

In January 2021, the EU restrictions on format were lifted and the system moved to issuing a new UK format of Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). However, the Home Office continued thereafter with plans to digitalise the system.

In line with the Home Office plan to digitalise the system, they continued to short date all Biometric Residence Permits to no later than 31-12-2024 hence, most applicants now receive a Biometric Residence Permit which expires sooner than their current leave to remain in the UK. If you hold a UK work, study, or family visa, under the new digital immigration system, you will need to obtain an online immigration status.

If you have used any of our Option-3 legal representation services or any our associated organisations service within the past five years for Leave to enter or remain in the UK and you were yet to be notified by us regarding the new UK eVISA switching. You can now complete our UK eVISA request form via the link below to begin the process.
